i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. we start with breaking news. tiger woods will not play at next week's u.s. open at congressional country club in bethesda. >> yet, tiger just tweeted late this afternoon not playing in the u.s. open. very disappointed. short-term frustration for long-term gain. woods said on his website, it's been a frustrating and difficult year, but i'm committed to a long-term health. this is the first time tiger will miss the open here since 1994. woods has been dealing with injuries to his left knee and achilles which he hurt back at the masters. he played at the players championships, but had to withdraw. the u.s. open starts next thursday, and you can see it right here on nbc 4. in other news this afternoon, the pressure is on. even members of congressman anthony weiner's own party are asking for an ethics investigation. >> it follows his admission yesterday that he sent sexually charged images and comments to several women online.

then lied about it. >> and there's also word today that there could be more pictures out there. kristen dahlgren has the latest from capitol hill. >> reporter: one day after representative anthony weiner's shocking mea culpa -- >> i've exchanged messages and photos of an expollicit nature. >> reporter: within hours of weiner's admission, democratic leader nancy pelosi was calling for an ethics investigation to see if government resources were used or rules broken. >> we have a code of conduct that we have to -- that we have to follow. so it's a much higher standard than people realize. >> reporter: today the republican national committee chair called on democratic leaders to demand weiner's resignation. but the new york congressman has vowed to stay in office. >> i don't see anything that i did that violated any rules of the house. >> reporter: still, the photo fallout may have already had an impact. weiner wanted to run for mayor

of new york next. >> i think this is all but certainly killed his mayoral campaign. >> reporter: conservative blogger andrew breitbart who broke the photo scandal says he has another x-rated picture he's not releasing. >> if he wants to open himself to an investigation, there are a lot of women. >> reporter: ultimately weiner's political fortunes will come down to voters. some unwilling to forgive or forget. >> something about these politicians. they feel that they are entitled to do whatever they want. >> reporter: while others -- >> i don't think we should be wasting our time and energy on this when we've got 9.1% of the public not working right now. >> reporter: wonder why the scandal is taking up any more time. and perhaps no big surprise, some republicans are now trying to make the scandal a campaign issue sending out press releases urging more than a house democrats to return campaign contributions from weiner. on capitol hill, kristen dahlgren, news 4. that brings us to our

facebook question of this day. is congressman weiner's political career over? >> here's what marty has to say about that. he writes only the voters in his district will decide his future. matt says the congressman's career is all but over. paula writes, one can only hope. >> and there's this response from robby. it should be and he adds if he were a republican, his political career would be over, but it's okay for democrats to do anything they want. end quote from robbie. maria shriver, spitzer and now huma are all wives caught in a scandal. we're going to look at how the wives' reactions will impact their political careers. park police are investigating the overnight shooting of a man at haynes point by one of their officers. it happened about 1:00 a.m. as police were closing the park for the night. they say a man getting out of a parked car wouldn't obey orders to drop a gun he was hold iinho.

police aren't saying whether the man was confrontational or pointing the gun he was holding. police are trying to figure out what led to a deadly car fire in laurel, maryland. a driver passed by the burning vehicle here on the exit ramp from west i-190 and i-95 when authorities got on the scene, they found a body inside. the entire exit ramp was shut down for the morning rush. investigators tell us they're not sure whether the car had crashed and caught on fire or if someone intentionally set it ablaze. police have not identified the victim yet. testimony in the casey anthony murder trial today focused on a trash bag. anthony is the florida mother charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter. today a crime scene investigator took the stand to testify about a garbage bag found in anthony's car. that bag is a key piece of evidence in this case. her defense lawyers say the foul odor in the car came from the

garbage bag. prosecutors argue the odor came from a body. prosecutors believe anthony put her toddler's body in the car after suffocating her. president obama is hosting german chancellor angela merkel today for her first official visit. but whale they talk about international issues, mr. obama has some pressing domestic problems. steve handelsman has the latest. >> obviously, we're experiencing some headwinds. >> reporter: president obama was on the defensive in a news conference with german chancellor angela merkel. >> the recovery that we're on is not producing jobs as quickly as i want it to happen. >> reporter: he said the biggest problem now is high fuel prices. the labor department reported today private sector hiring dropped almost 5% in april. as he welcomed merkel today, the president was paying the price. his job approval that spiked up after the killing of osama bin laden is down below 50%.

and 59% disapprove of mr. obama's handling of the economy. a new low in "the washington post"/abc news poll. it leaves him open to attack by republican candidates, like tim pawlenty today in chicago. >> the president wrongly thought the stimulus, the bailouts and the takeovers were the solution. he says they worked. they did not. >> reporter: president obama takes credit for overting disaster and for future hiring. >> we have set a path that will lead us to long-term economic growth. and so our task is to not panic, not overreact. >> reporter: a plea for supporters to hang in, even though the recovery is stalled. that "washington post"/abc news poll found president obama running ahead of most possible republican candidates, but not one significantly perhaps. he's tied with mitt romney, seen

as especially strong on the economy. i'm steve handelsman, news 4, capitol hill. loudoun county welcomed royalty today. prince henrick of denmark paid a visit to ashburn this morning. there wasn't a whole lot of pomp, but there was a big focus on the environment. the prince was at the american headquarters of the danish firm mil-tek. they make eco-friendly trash disposal equipment. the prince helped them debut a new machine that reduces waste from polystyrene, a packaging material that doesn't break down in landfills. thousands of people have been evacuated in alpine and grier, arizona because of the massive wildfires burning. the 365,000 -- 365-square-mile fire has scorched more than 233,000 acres and destroyed five buildings. this is arizona's third largest wildfire on record. right now firefighters say

they've been unable to contain the wallow fire. hot and humid afternoon on the home front here. >> meteorologist veronica johnson joins us now. veron karks we understand it's going to get hotter. >> exactly. temperatures and humidity both higher today. now tomorrow is going to be even worse. check outside. you can see today we've got that hazy sky. but again, temperatures just continue to climb as we go through the workweek. a look at where we are right now in cleveland park. and in the district, 89 degrees your current temperature. in prince george's county, ft. washington. so just under the 90-degree mark. reston in fairfax, 84 degrees. and 88 currently in coalsville, maryland. take a look at the dew point temperatures. we've been sitting here between 60 and 65 degrees. so as we go to our what's the point chart, that puts us into some slightly humid air for today. tomorrow it's going to be humid if not very humid. and when you factor that with

some record heat or near record heat around the area, the record for tomorrow is 98 degrees. that's exactly what we're going. we've got a heat advisory because heat indices, they'll be between 100 and 105 degrees. so this will be our second heat wave now that we're moving through. that heat advisory right through the day tomorrow from noon until 8:00 p.m. it will clear out. the temperature will drop below 80 degrees by 9:00 and into the mid-70s by 11:00 p.m. so i'm calling this a nice evening seeing what lies ahead for the next two days. again. pretty high temperatures. we'll talk more about this heat advisory and the possibility of some afternoon thunderstorms, too, coming up in just a couple of minutes. the plane that landed in the hudson river is on the move tune aviation museum in charlotte, north carolina. it spent the night in perryville, maryland. it's traveling on a massive flatbed tractor trailer. for safety reasons, crews are trying to avoid overpasses instead of driving down

interstate 95, they'll head west on interstates 70 and 68 into west virginia. then on to i-79. well, we are happy to announce that the olympics are staying on nbc for years to come. today, nbc won the tv rights to broadcast the games through 2020. >> the winning bid is worth more than $4 billion. nbc outbid espn and fox. the next games are set for london in 2012. so congratulations to the peacock. >> indeed. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton is trying to prove a point by dancing. norton says the dancing flash mobs at the jefferson memorial this past month show that people want more events down on the mall. norton is planning to meet with the national park service to talk about bringing more people-related activities to the mall. she's talking with tv producer and judge nigel lythgoe from "so you think you can dance" about

kanye west is out with his new music video today for "monster." it's already causing a monster controversy. ♪ >> monster is off kanye's album "my beautiful dark, twisted fantasy." it's already again causing controversy because it features what some are calling disturbing imagery. corpse-like women, for example. the final version plays with a disclaimer calling the video an art piece. okay. you be the judge. >> yep. some good news today about schools in montgomery and fairfax counties. they have the highest graduation rates in the nation with more than 85% of students getting a diploma. >> however, that success isn't repeated in the district which has schools that continue to struggle. craig melvin has more in "the 20." >> d.c.'s public schools do not have the same reputation for success as their suburban

neighbors, but while parents are being urged to invest in the system, it appears d.c.'s lawmakers do not have the same level of commitment. and choose the private route for their kids. joining suslisa gardner of the "washington examiner." she is 1 of the 20, our list of the 20 people worth following in our community right now on twitter. let's talk about what folks are saying. you've gotten some feedback to this piece you wrote. >> a lot of parents and many people do not want to see any politicians using their children as political pawns. they say school choice is a historic part of d.c. why would anyone with the means send their kids to failing schools. it's widely acknowledged by other observers that these schools aren't going to turn around if the most active parents are, you know, leaving them, shipping their kids across the city to the better schools or enrolling them in private school. >> did any of the council members say to you, lisa, you know, d.c. schools just aren't where my family would prefer that they be. and until they get there, we're going to send our kids to

don't pop a sweat yet. today is just the warm-up. >> that's right. that's what i said. you've heard of the cooldown after the run. today the warm-up before the big heat hits. and that is going to be tomorrow. we're talking about record heat around the area. and high humidity. so we're going to get fortunately both together. so today our transition day. even the sky making the transition. a lot more haze out there today. let's head over to the weather wall. we've got 89 degrees right now. i think when the official high comes out for the day, we may have topped out at 90 degrees at reagan national. the dew point again is at 62 degrees. humidity right now at 41%. we have the wind that's at 14 miles per hour. take a look at the clouds as they've been moving into the area. the last couple of hours they've made their way from west to east reaching howard county.

reaching montgomery county through fairfax and areas just right around stafford county and caroline county. we've got high clouds. we've got some haze out there. but those clouds will be leaving the area overnight. and we have not gotten any rain at all but, boy there have been some big storms and some high winds coming south out of ohio down through west virginia. severe weather there. that was even the early part of the day. our best chance of rain comes friday and saturday. but note that there's a slight chance on thursday. big story, first, though, again the heat. that's going to be expanding still off to the east. you are looking at the temperatures. nation's midsection from omaha to wichita, kansas, st. louis, missouri, and memphis, tennessee. currently it feels like 100 to 101 degrees. that's the heat out ahead of this cold front. that again will be expanding off to the east. so our biggest days to worry about the heat, tomorrow and thursday. all right. let me take you through the next 48 hours. high pressure moving out tomorrow. just another hazy day for us.

i think any storms will be isolated and remaining off to the west tomorrow. as that cold front draws near, we have a slight chance for picking up some showers and scattered thunderstorms during the afternoon on thursday. again, a better chance for friday. and especially on saturday, as our wind starts to switch and our temperatures start to cool down, too. this evening, we drop from 87 to 79 degrees. it's going to be warm and a warm start certainly for the day tomorrow. from 67 to 70 degrees, your day part for tomorrow, hot and humid again. a heat advisory as that heat index is expected to be above 100 degrees for tomorrow. so it's a day really to take it easy and do all the things that you were going to try and do outside nearly the day. thursday, slight chance for showers and storms. better chance for saturday. we'll take a look at the rest of the weekend coming up and, more importantly, we have launched a new weather page. so we're going to show you the features of that coming up in a couple of minutes. >> all right. >> getting the navigator out. >> ipad.

>> welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. here's what's making news right now. tiger woods will not play in next week's u.s. open in bethesda. the golfer says today his knee has not healed. and he's thinking about his long-term future. the u.s. open at congressional country club starts next thursday. preparations are under way right now for a state dinner for germ chancellor angela merkel. it begins in about 90 minutes. merkel is the first female government leader to officially meet with the president at the white house. earlier today, they held a joint news conference. the stock market gave up some early gains today and closed lower for a fifth straight day. the dow lost 19 points. the s&p 500 lost a single point and the nasdaq was also down about a point. house leaders have formally requested an ethics probe to determine if congressman anthony weiner broke house rules. and today the chairman of the republican party called for his resignation. weiner admits sending

inappropriate photos and comments to women online, but he's vowing to keep his seat. weiner's wife, like a lot of political wives before her, may ultimately be the deciding factor in just how badly this scandal tarnishes his career. >> nbc's savannah guthrie has the story. >> to be clear, the picture was of me, and i sent it. i am deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife huma and our family and my constituents, my friends, supporters and staff. >> reporter: when congressman anthony weiner apologized for lying to his wife, she was nowhere to be seen. she's huma abedin, an aide to secretary of state hillary rodham dliclinton. she's beautiful, accomplished and married weiner last year in a ceremony officiated by bill clinton. >> she's like an honorary member of the clinton family. she's very beautiful. familiar face on capitol hill. but she's not widely known to

the public. >> my wife is a remarkable woman. she's not responsible for any of this. this was visited upon her. >> reporter: weiner's revelations have many speculating about not only the future of their marriage but about abedin's career as well. >> i think if you start to see this scandal unfolding in a new way or if another shoe drops, then her career could be impacted. the secretary of state could then suffer because of that and then i think you might see her getting out of this marriage. >> reporter: weiner says his wife knew about some of his online relationships before they were married but did not know the truth about his twitter picture until monday. >> she's very disappointed. and she also told me that she loved me and wanted us to, you know, to pull through this. >> couples can certainly get through situations like this. now when somebody is a public figure, you have the added shame and humiliation to figure into it. >> reporter: weiner's admission

follows a string of politicians who have publicly confessed to cheating with wives standing by their men from elliott and silda spitzer. >> i've disappointed and failed to live up to the standard i expected of myself. >> to bill and hillary clinton. >> i did have a relationship with miss lewinsky that was not appropriate. >> but not all political wives stand by their husbands. when former south carolina governor mark sanford apologized for his affair -- >> i have been unfaithful to my wife. >> reporter: sanford's wife jenny left him. >> e-mailing and sending sexual texts and not knowing somebody might be kind of a lesser offense. but, still, to the person's spouse, it's a betrayal, and to the public, it's a betrayal only because he lied about it. >> that was savannah guthrie reporting. coming up at 5:00, we'll talk to luke russert who has been following this scandal from the start. an atlantic city casino is hoping to boost gambling with

bustiers. the tropicana casino and resort is creating a special nightclub where female blackjack and roulette dealers will wear skimpy bustiers and stockings. it's apparently part of a growing trend to get more people into casinos by spicing things up. servers at another atlantic city casino are now wearing revealing flapper costumes. a group of female employees filed a lawsuit over that. well if that doesn't entice people to the tropicana, a recent string of luck may do the trick. according to the press of atlantic city, the tropicana just paid about $5.3 million to a gambler last week. the owner said the man won most of his cash during a six-hour streak playing craps. he said the man left a tip of more than $150,000 for the table game dealers. his big win comes just weeks after another man won nearly 6 million at that same casino. from being lucky with money

to being lucky in life, this is a story, the kind of story you only hear about in the movies. a man shot at point blank range survived because his religious medallion deflected the bullet. it happened on sunday during a robbery attempt at the convenience store that he owns. the victim is badly bruised but otherwise he wasn't seriously injured. the medallion, his last line of defense, bears the inscription, god is one. thousands of people rolled up their sleeves and got inked today. the international tattoo convention in bogota, colombia drew a very colorful crowd. one woman stole the show. practically ever inch of maria jose christina's body is covered in tattoos. she says she began transforming into vampire woman when she was 21 years old. on top of the ink, she has dental fangs, titanium inplants and more than 30 piercings. she's also a mother of four and

we're getting a new view of chile's vol kacanic eruption fr space. a plume of ash billowing from the andes mountains on saturday. the plume soared more than six miles into the sky darkening neighboring argentina. around 3500 people were

is the temperature now in wheaton and germantown, maryland. what's happening across this area? those storms that you see barreling south, those missed us coming through western pennsylvania, around ohio and around west virginia. we've got some storms that are riding the rim of this heat. big area of high pressure that continues to build across the east. my 11:00 p.m., what clouds we have out there, those will clear out. temperature will drop to 76 degrees. and then for d.c., inside the beltway, 69 to 71 degrees early tomorrow morning. we will have some sunshine to start the day. 65 in frederick. 67 to start in fredericksburg. it will be a warm start which means when you start already high you end up even higher, right? the temperatures close to 100 degrees down around fredericksburg and even sports around warrenton for tomorrow. a few cooling storms during the afternoon on thursday. better chance for friday. the temperature drops to 93 for a high. into the upper 80s on saturday. right now it looks as though

there will be a good chance of rain on saturday and even the possibility of some more showers and storms coming our way on saturday. two days of very, very high heat and humidity. >> all right. thanks for the warning. >> check on the elderly -- >> and bring in the pets. >> thanks, veronica. there is controversy over those popular girl scout cookies involving a little girl who sells them but who has never tasted one. >> the scout's mom isn't happy the organization won't change the recipes and go gluten free. but as katie tur reports, the girl scouts say that's the way the cookie crumbles. >> stacey manilow and her daughter are making cookies. but these aren't your average treats, and elle isn't your average little girl. >> instead of regular wheat flour we use a combination of rice flours and potato flour. >> reporter: elle can't eat anything with gluten. it's not too big of an issue for her mom as she's figured out how to duplicate most foods.

there is just one problem -- >> this is for selling cookies at a booth sale. >> reporter: she's a girl scout and the cookies she has to sell every year to get that patch are made with wheat or gluten. meaning elle has never tried her troop's product. >> why can't you have it? >> because it has gluten in it, and i can't eat a cookie because it has wheat in it. >> what happens when you eat wheat? >> my tummy hurts. >> reporter: after numerous unanswered calls and e-mails, she decided to start a petition urging the organization to make an alternative cookie. >> the human aspect of it that there are girl scouts that can't eat the cookies and they should be thinking about their own members has not been enough for them. >> reporter: girl scouts of america says that while they try to make healthy cookies like these, they don't have the ability to churn out specific cookies for specific dietary needs. >> reporter: nearly 3,000 signatures in, manilow hopes she'll change that policyso lit sell their cookies and eat them,

playing nintendo is about to get a lot more touchy feely. today the video game company announced its newest system, the wii you. this next generation wii will have high definition video and a touch screen controller. it will also have a camera with possible video chat capabilities. current wii games will work with the wii u. the new console is expected to hit shelves some time after april of next year. no word yet on a price. imagine getting through

airport security in five seconds flat. the international air transport association is unveiled a checkpoint system that would do away with one size fits all screening. passengers would be directed to one of three lanes, either known traveler, normal or enhanced security. travelers wouldn't have to remove any clothing or take their shoes off. and the lower a person's deemed security risk, the simpler and the fastest screening. the international air transport association is hoping to see this technology implemented in the next few years. >> still ahead on news 4 at 4:00 -- time is running out to find the source of the deadly e. coli outbreak. tests confirm a 2-year-old girl in southwest virginia died over the weekend from e. coli. health experts say the strain is different from the strain that's caused death and illness in germany. meanwhile, that deadly strain has infected 1,600 people. michelle's ku s ku sinsy report. >> reporter: the daily numbers are smaller now than when they originally started but the mystery remains, where is this illness coming from and let's get to the bottom of it. in the last couple of days, they pointed the finger strongly at
